1.1.1. Zhang 2022 (oculomotor nerve palsy) ☆
Zhang X, Cui H, Liu Y, Zhang L, Du R, Yuan H, Achakzai R, Zheng S. Acupuncture for oculomotor nerve palsy:A systematic review and meta-analysis. Complement Ther Med. 2022 Dec;71:102888. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ctim.2022.102888
Background | To evaluate the safety and efficacy of acupuncture in the treatment of oculomotor nerve palsy (ONP). |
---|---|
Methods | The following database will be required from PubMed, Cochrane Library, Medline, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang data. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing acupuncture alone versus no treatment/another active therapy/sham acupuncture or comparing acupuncture with another active therapy versus the same active therapy were included. Meta-analysis was conducted according to the 2020 PRISMA guidelines. Data was analyzed using RevMan 5.4 software. Results were reported as risk ratios (RR) for dichotomous outcomes or mean differences (MD) for continuous outcomes, with 95 % confidence intervals (CI). The Cochrane risk of bias tool was used to access the methodological quality of the trails. |
Results | Eighteen RCTs with 1150 participants comparing acupuncture versus other therapies were included. The results showed a significant differences in the clinical efficiency rate (RR = 1.30, 95 %CI = 1.23-1.37, P < 0.001), scores of diplopia (MD = - 0.78, 95 %CI = - 1.39 to - 0.77, P < 0.001), palpebral fissure size (MD = 1.04, 95 %CI = 0.41-1.68, P = 0.001), the pupil diameter (MD = - 0.56, 95 %CI = - 0.70 to - 0.42, P < 0.001), quality of life (MD = 8.96, 95 %CI = 6.79-11.13, P < 0.001) between the experiment and control groups. However, there were no significant differences in the adverse effects (RR = 0.52, 95 %CI = 0.22-1.22, P = 0.13). The quality of the evidence test by GRADE was low or very low. |
Conclusion | Most included studies suggested that acupuncture was more effective than the control group in the treatment of ONP. However, the quality evidence of most of the studies was low and most of them were performed in China. |
1.1.2. Ku 2019
Ku Yong, Kang Jae, Kong Hae, Ryu Hwa, Lee Hyun. A Systematic Review of Acupuncture for Oculomotor Nerve Palsy. Journal of Acupuncture Research. 2019;36:59-71. [174834].
Objective and Methods | Acupuncture treatment for oculomotor nerve palsy has been increasing recently. This study analyzed randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and case reports, using the Cochrane risk of bias tool to investigate the efficacy of acupuncture therapy for oculomotor nerve palsy. This analysis was performed on March 7, 2019, using online databases (PubMed, Cochrane, NDSL, OASIS, CNKI) where 208 articles were retrieved. |
---|---|
Results | Of these, there were 18 case reports and 18 RCTs that matched the inclusion criteria, of which 32 studies used acupuncture as the primary intervention, 1 used pharmacopuncture, 1 used fire-needling, and 1 used electroacupuncture. The most commonly used acupoints were BL1, BL2, ST2, TE23, Ex-HN5, LI4, GB14, ST36 , GB20 and GB1. Significant findings were reported in all RCTs. Six adverse events were reported in 3 RCTs, with no effect on the outcome. No side effects were reported in the case reports. The risk-of-bias analysis showed that the articles did not report the experimental protocol used and it was not clear whether the study was blinded. Hence, it was difficult to assess the risk of bias. |
Conclusions | Analysis of 36 studies showed that acupuncture therapy for oculomotor nerve palsy was effective in many cases. It was difficult to evaluate the potential bias. |
1.1.3. Liu 2012 ☆
Liu Min, Liu Mai-Lan, Yu Mei-Ling, Lan Lei, Tang Yong. [Acupuncture treatment in paralytic strabismus: a systematic review]. Journal of Liaoning College of Traditional Chinese. 2012;6: 18-20. [187004].
Objective | To evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture for paralytic strabismus. |
---|---|
Methods | We electronically searched Cochrane Library (Issue l, 2011), PubMed (1980 to Jul. 2011), MEDLINE (1966 to 2011), Ovid EBM Database (1991 to 2011), CBMdisc (1978 to Jul. 2011), VIP (1989 to Jul, 2011), CNKI (1979 to Jul, 2011) and Wangfang Database (1983 to Jul. 2011) as well as handsearching four traditional Chinese medicine journals to obtain randomized controlled trials (RCTs)about acupuncture for paralytic strabismus. Quality assessment was conducted by the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions 5. 1. 0. Meta-analyses were performed for the results of homogeneous studies using RevMan 5. 0 software. |
Results | 5 RCTs involving 301 patients met the inclusion criteria. The meta-analysis of five trials showed that acupuncture was superior in paralytic strabismus with RR=1. 30, and 95%CI was 1. 09 to 1. 54. |
Conclusions | Acupuncture is a probably effective treatment method for paralytic strabismus. However, it still needs high qualify studies to reevaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture treatment for paralytic strabismus because of the 5 included low quality trials in current reports. |

1.2.1. Qin 2016 (Ocular Acupuncture) ~
Qin Xinzhang, Baile Ning, Min Zhendeng, Nan Buwang, Li Huang, Yong Qifang. [Meta-analysis on random-control experment of eye-acupuncture on extrarectus muscles for the treatment of abducens paralysis]. Chinese Journal of Ethnomedicine and Ethnopharmacy. 2016;6:51-54. [186941].
Objective | Studies that have been published in China on the curative effect of Eye -acupuncture on extrarectus muscles for the treatment of abducens pralysis were searched and analyzed by Meta -analysis, in order to provide some evidences in treating abducens pralysis. |
---|---|
Method | All the studies that have been searched and strictly evaluated through Mate -analysis by the software Rev-Man5. 3, to evaluate the curative effect of Eye -acupuncture on extrarectus muscles for the treatment of abducens pralysis. |
Result | Totally 7 studies including 597 cases were analyzed. Compared with the control group, the effective rate of the treatment group was [RR=1. 40, 95%CI (1. 29, 1. 53)], the eye -diplopia degree of the treatment group was [RR =-1. 16, 95%CI (-1. 45, -0. 87)], the eye -movement degree of the treatment group was [RR =2. 89, 95%CI (2. 47, 3. 31)]. |
Conclusion | Eye -acupuncture on extrarectus muscles has the effect to improve the treatment of abducens pralysis and improve symptoms of dipiopia and eye -movement disorder. |
